Ash Pit

Updated: Dec 16, 2023

The model train layout of the museum has been intricately designed by Graham MacDonald. There are a lot of different elements that you might find fascinating and detailed. In the layout, you can also find an ash pit.

This ash pit was used to empty the ash box in the trains. The ash box would be filled with ash as the coal and wood would burn and turn into ashes. The engine would be positioned just over the pit. The locomotive operator would open the box and let the ashes fall into the pit.

As the pit got filled, the workers would use the cart and fill it up with the ashes by hand or use conveyor belts. These ashes would be then transported to the landfills.

These minute details were carefully taken care of by Graham MacDonald in his layout. You can visit the museum to learn more about the layout and the history of trains in Ontario.
